Fast & Slow Stochastic Oscillator

Calculation Methodology:
Fast Stochastic Oscillator is calculated using 14-period range to calculate %K and 3-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) to calculate %D.
Slow Stochastic oscillator is calculated using the %D from earlier as Slow K and Slow D is calculated by futher applying a 3-period SMA on the Slow K(%D)

Detailed calculation steps are provided in the Reference links. Values are adjusted for splits (if applicable)
How to use this indicator:
Stochastic Oscillator is a price momentum oscillator used to track overbought (>80) and oversold (<20) levels by analyzing close level compared to the 14-day range.
  • Indications are bullish when oscillator goes below 20 and then back above 20 (conversely, bearish when it goes above 80 and then below 80)
  • Intersections of the oscillators is used as a signal of impending reversal as the momentum is shifting (Fast Stochastic Oscillators intersect more than Slow Stochastics by definition and therefore more likely to produce false signals)
  • Reversal is also indicated by divergence between the oscillator and price action (e.g. Bullish divergence when oscillator hits a higher low while price hits a lower low; Bearish divergence when price makes a higher high while oscillator forms a lower high).
Stochastic Oscillator is considered more effective in sideways markets with broad trading ranges or slow-moving trends. Stochastic Oscillators can sometimes stay overbought/oversold for extended periods in a strong trend. Also, Stochastic oscillators can produce false signals in volatile markets

  • Interpretation above is not comprehensive but rather just a starting point of understanding. Experienced market professionals typically use a combination of different datapoints to drive decisions. Use additional links in the References section for more details
